Good Mother

I can not present you with any thing in thankfulness for your much care of me, but an acknowledgement of them, which I will do to the last day of my breath. I obey your command in keeping my father company: which is a great happiness to me, in respect he is so merry and healthful. I should think I had all thing here if we hade your cheerful company: which I hope will be shortly: I am sorry that our businesses proceed no better: but god will teach me to bear poverty: that I may know how to use riches.

In deed forsooth, I think you conceive me to be, light of foot, that you have sent me such heavy soles: these must needs make me a housewife for I can not well roll a broad: but to be serious with you it is for lack of wit if I be not a good housewife for I rise very early and look about and me thinks all things are well: and I am your true obedient daughter Margratt Longvill.1 [In the margin is written ‘pray some nedells’]
